Freda Tan

Freda Tan is a multimedia artist based in Toronto. Her work centers on the concept of flux sentience — the fluid, constantly evolving field of awareness that flows through all matter and experience. Through her paintings, she reimagines the classical motifs of the four elements, earth, water, air and fire, as they manifest in daily life. By weaving these familiar scenes into layered, sensory compositions, Freda invites viewers to reconnect with the elemental essence underlying all perception and sensation, fostering presence in the flux of being.

Freda holds an Honours Bachelor of Science degree from University of Toronto and is currently at her thesis year of pursuing a Fine Arts degree at OCAD university.

“I use familiar images and the four elements as entryways to remind viewers that the elements are not abstract concepts but the very substrate of our sensory experience.Through layered transparency, directional gestural lines and shifting color, I seek to capture universal flux – the sentient state of everything which consists of energy waves.”
